BUNGENI - The police at Bungeni arrested a 51-year-old woman for allegedly stealing a baby on Monday.

According to the police, members of the community suspected foul play when they saw a baby with her during the past week. The members of the community then informed the police that the woman had not been pregnant, but had a baby with her.

The police stated that the woman, a traditional healer, made different statements about the baby when she was questioned about the baby. She first stated that she adopted the baby from Chiawelo Clinic in Gauteng. Later she changed her story, saying a client gave her the child as a gift, the police said.

Captain Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, spokesperson of the police in the Vhembe District said the police are still investigating the matter in Chiawelo and the Bungeni area.
