Hundreds of people who attended the Messina Hospital’s summit on service delivery agreed that there is tangible service delivery improvement at the hospital. The annual event was recently held at the Nancefield community hall.
In attendance were representatives from various community structures, representatives from government departments, individual interested community members and representatives from Musina Local Municipality.
According to the acting chief executive officer of the hospital, Mr George Makuya, huge progress has been reported since last year. He says despite of a lack resources and the ever growing population of Musina, workers at Messina Hospital are doing their best to serve local people with dedication.
Among the achievements, Makuya announced that the Road Accident Fund has opened an office at the hospital. “Our people were travelling long distances for its services. We are very happy that local people will now get the much-needed services on their doorstep.”
He said the hospital managed to acquire a dental autoclave and dental ex-ray machine. “We managed to appoint 10 health professionals and purchased a new incubator for new-born babies. The community has been complaining that when the power went off, we were unable to offer some of the much-needed services. It is my pleasure to announce that we also managed to acquire a standby generator.”
He said in their effort to build a relationship with the community, they managed to conduct events which included a back-to-school campaign and a party for children who need special care. “We also made sure that we offer experiential learning to 12 individuals to expose them to the real work situation.”
Among the challenges faced by the hospital, Makuya listed limited working space, limited staff accommodation, budget constraints, an influx of foreign nationals and a shortage of pharmaceuticals. “However, we are doing our best to address those challenges to make sure that they don’t affect the delivery of services.”
