News  Date: 17 May 2002

MASERA - An 18-year-old Grade 12 pupil at Mabutlafasi Secondary School, briefly appeared in court on a charge of attempted murder.

The case arose from an incident at school last week, when the accused allegedly attacked a teacher, Mrs Mavis Machete, with a panga on the school premises. According to the police report, the accused was not in good terms with the teachers at school. It is stated that his attitude was allegedly influenced by his failure to do his school tasks as ordered by the teachers.

It is further said that the dispute with the teachers has at one stage reached the point where his parents were summoned to school to be informed about their son's behaviour. Even after the meeting, the accused continued with his bad work and wrong attitude against the teachers, the police said.

On the morning of the incident, the boy was engaged in a quarrel with the teacher about his work. After the incident, he allegedly vanished from the school premises and returned with a panga. An argument then broke out between him and teacher and he chopped her all over her body.

The incident allegedly took place in the presence of other teachers and pupils.

The teacher was treated in hospital. The case was postponed until June 12 for further investigation.
