THOHOYANDOU – Maindis Ladies Football Club will not take part in the next stage of the Sanlam Halala Cup KO Competition. This follows their 2-3 defeat at the hands of Development Football Club in their thrilling game that was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday.
The Polokwane-based Development FC were dictating the terms from the onset with their midfielders creating dangerous moves from the centre of the park. They were rewarded for their efforts in the 18th minute, when Nthabiseng Mafelo blasted in a rebound after Sheila Mabotsa had unleashed a powerful shot that hit the woodwork and bounced back into play.
The struggle continued with the visitors enjoying ball possession. The wheel of fortune turned in their favour again ten minutes after their first goal. Sheila Mabotsa easily hooked the ball into the net after the keeper of Maindis fumbled while handling the ball.
Maindis reduced the deficit by one in the 34th minute through Rhanzu Mathebula, after a move that was initiated by Mpho Ramala. Agnes Mpofu of the Development Football Club was booked for rough tackling on Rhanzu Mathebula two minutes later.
Sheila Mabotsa scored the third goal for the visiting side to bring the score to 3-1 at half time. Desebo Mametja scored the second for Maindis a minute into the last half.
Maindis missed a golden opportunity when they were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute, because Development's defender, Anikie Mothapo, handled the ball within the box. Desebo Mametja caused an upset by shooting wide from the white spot.
