Mufamadi vows to fight against AIDS

News  Date: 30 May 2003

Limpopo's MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Mr Thaba Mufamadi, said that single-sex dwellings, which tend to encourage the spread of HIV/Aids will not be erected for worker accommodation along the mining areas in the province. Mufamadi was addressing members of the press during a candle-lighting ceremony.

Limpopo has vast mineral deposits with mining declared the leading sector in economic development in the province. During the 2002/2003 financial year, investment in mining amounted to R4,9 billion. Mufamadi reflected on the single-sex dwellings of the urban areas in the country where absence of family encouraged indiscreet behaviour.

"We will not encourage the formation of single-sex accommodation for mine-workers in our mining areas," said Mufamadi, adding that family accommodation structures will follow.

Wide-spread education and awareness campaigns are reinforced by the Department Employee Assistance Program to avert any negative sentiments among staff members.

When addressing the departmental staff members later, Mufamadi indicated that he was aware that the Aids epidemic is likely to impact on many areas of the public service, including service delivery improvement and poverty alleviation. He encouraged his staff to be active in the fight against the pandemic.

While HIV/Aids has penetrated all spheres of life, Mufamadi stressed that the country's constitution and Acts, such as the Labour Relations Act, underline the Department's policy, which he steadfastly endorsed. "Let our policy be the guiding principle for dealing with colleagues infected by HIV/Aids," he said.

" I ask you to stand with me today and in many more days to come, in solidarity to fight this disease. Support me when I embrace those among us who are infected. Join me when I mourn the death of those that have passed on. Most of all, let's learn not to misspeak about HIV/Aids and to treat infected people with respect," he concluded.
