LOWVELD – The continued attacks on police officers are a matter of great concern to the police services.
According to a statement issued by the police in the Lowveld this week, four police officers were attacked in the area within a space of three weeks. The most recent incident took place at the Giyani Shopping Centre last Friday evening (April 26) at about 19:00. Masenyane Richard Nkuna (40) was on his way home from work when he was confronted by a group of people who attacked him without saying a word.
The statement further indicates that the attackers shot him on the shoulder during the ordeal. He was taken to the nearby Nkhensani hospital where he later died. The statement indicates that the victim was robbed off his 9mm service pistol and a cell phone during the incident.
Nkuna was attached to the Giyani Police Station and was residing at Malamulele Township at the time of his death.
The police have revealed that unknown people in Tzaneen attacked Insp M Mhlongo three weeks ago. He was seriously injured during the incident.
Insp Michael Chauke of Malamulele was attacked a fortnight ago, according to the same statement.
Insp RM Maluleke, who was attached to the Bushbuckridge Police Station, was attacked by four unknown men early last week.
In the statement the Area Commissioner, Muladelo Raphulu appealed to the members of the community to support the police in their fight against the escalation of crime in the area.
