Man arrested for murdering pensioner

TZANEEN – The police in the Lowveld have arrested a 25-year-old man following the death of an 82-year-old pensioner.

The incident took place at Sasekani Village near Tzaneen on Monday afternoon at about 17:00. The deceased was at her cousin's home when the incident occurred.

According to a spokesperson of the police in the Lowveld area, Capt Moatshe Ngoepe, the suspect proceeded to the deceased's cousin's home on the day of the incident. He found the deceased sleeping under a tree. According to the statement the man started assaulting the woman with hard objects on the head without saying anything to her, killing her instantly.

The deceased was identified as Mrs Angelinah Mabuza (82) of Sasekani village. The suspect was arrested the following day and was still to appear before the Ritavi magistrate's court at the time of going to the press.

According to the police statement the suspect is a psychiatric patient.

In another incident, the police have arrested a 46-year-old man for attempted murder on Tuesday afternoon. This follows an incident that took place at Dwarsloop Township near Bushbuckridge on Monday evening at about 18:30.

According to the police statement the suspect was engaged in a hot argument with the victim during the incident. They were arguing over a motor vehicle. The victim is a younger brother to the suspect. During the argument, it is alleged the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim in the stomach. He was admitted to the Mapulaneng hospital in a serious condition while the suspect was still to appear in court at the time of going to press.
