THOHOYANDOU – The Thohoyandou Police have opened a case of attempted murder against an 18-year-old girl of Mbilwi Village near Sibasa, who allegedly dumped her newborn baby into a toilet pit at the Mbilwi clinic last Tuesday morning (April 2).
According to police spokesperson, Captain Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, a 46 year-old woman saw the girl at about 10:30, sitting under a tree while crying in the clinic yard.
“The woman then saw the same girl slowly moving towards the toilet. Realising that the girl was not coming back, the woman decided to follow. She then saw the girl standing next to the toilet, bent over as if she was suffering from serious pains.
“The woman noticed blood on the girl’s legs and her clothes. The girl, who was bleeding profusely, said she was menstruating. After suspecting that the girl might have given birth, the woman called the nurses,” said Mushavhanamadi.
The nurses then discovered a newly born baby, covered with blood, thrown into the toilet pit. The police were informed and members of the local fire brigade assisted in removing the baby boy, who was still alive.
The girl and her child were taken to the Tshilidzini Hospital. She was later charged with attempted murder and the case was referred to the Crime Investigating Unit.
At the time of going to press, the girl and her baby where still at Tshilidzini Hospital, where the baby was still receiving treatment.
