THOHOYANDOU – Police in Thohoyandou have opened an inquest docket following the death of a 36-year-old woman who died in hospital after she allegedly set herself alight.

Police spokesperson Capt Ailwei Mushavhanamadi said Azwinndini Ramathaga of Unit C, Golgota, "doused her body with paraffin before she set herself alight last Sunday evening. She was then taken to Tshilidzini hospital where she died on Monday (1/5) at about 12h45," said Mushavhanamadi.

Mushavhanamadi, who described the incident as horrible and unfortunate said it appeared as if the woman had problems supporting her two children from her previous marriage.

"It appeared as if she was struggling to support the children while complaining that the father was neglecting them. However, we are still investigating the case," said Mushavhanamadi.
