GIYANI – The police in Giyani have arrested two men on Wednesday morning on charges of rape and attempted rape.
In the first incident, a 60-year-old man of Hlaniki Village was arrested at his home for allegedly raping a 14-year old school girl.
According to Insp Hasani Steven Mabaso, spokesperson of the police in Giyani, the alleged rapes took place between February 2 and last Saturday evening. The statement indicates that last Saturday evening, the suspect proceeded to the victim's kraal during the night. The suspect and the complainant are neighbours.
It is alleged that she was already in bed when the suspect arrived. After knocking several times on the door, the victim opened it. He then asked her to accompany her to his home, but she allegedly refused.
He then allegedly grabbed her by the hand and forced her to go with him. On arrival at his house, he allegedly raped her. The incident was reported to the police the following morning, and they arrested him on Wednesday morning. He was still to appear in court at the time of going to press.
In another incident, the police have arrested a 35-year old man at Mphagani Village near Giyani on Wednesday morning. The incident took place at Mphagani Village the night before his arrest.
The police stated that the 43-year-old complainant was walking along the road and met the suspect, who was walking in the opposite direction.
He allegedly grabbed her and told her that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her. She refused and he started to try and undress her. During the incident, he managed to tear of the woman's underwear.
She then screamed for help, and he became afraid and ran away. The woman reported the matter to the police the following morning and the alleged culprit was arrested shortly thereafter. At the time of going to press, he was still to appear in court.
