DOPENI – Indigenous drums made by local sculptor Mr Samson Mudzunga will soon be exhibited in New York.
The exhibitions will be at the Museum for African Art and the Cathedral of St John the Divine. One of Mudzunga’s drums will be presented to the cathedral as a gift from South Africa.
The exhibitions form part of a larger South African initiative, commemorating a decade of democracy and “exposing to New York the extraordinary creativity of the country,” said the project’s campaigner, Dick Enthoven of Spier. This initiative includes five weeks of theatre performances by Dimpho di Kopane and several gala opening events. The exhibition opens in New York in September, while the theatre performances begin the last week of October.
Mudzunga is well known for staging performances in which his masterfully crafted drums play a central role.
