MESSINA – The local municipal council decided to retain the town's present name.
In a resolution, which was described by observers as a meaningful compromise, Council decided to retain the name Messina for the town, but to change the name of the municipality to Musina Municipality.
The decision to retain the present name came after inputs by the local business community. Members of the community drew attention to the astronomic costs and other practical implications of changing the names of businesses in town, and requested that the name should not be changed.
In spite of a majority decision at a mass public meeting in Nancefield, that the name should be changed to Musina, Council decided to accommodate the business community's request. The decision will be forwarded to the provincial legislator.
