PAC backs Mapungubwe and Limpopo

News  Date: 01 February 2002

The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) in the Northern Province strongly objects to the inclusion of the names "Capricorn" and "Great North" to the suggested new names of the province.

The PAC provincial leader, Mr Maxwell Nemadzivhanani said the two names lack indigenous identity and character. "Capricorn denotes a geographical parallel line common around the globe and not exclusively found within our province. The name "Great North" is no more different from the name "Northern Province" which does not, in any manner, have a distinct promotional advantage and an all-embracing provincial identity," said Nemadzivhanani.

Nemadzivhanani stated that his party strongly appeal to the committee on the renaming of the province to drop "Capricorn" and "Great North" from the short-list, "because they are not suitable and irrelevant for the arguments surrounding the objectives and of the provincial name changes."

According to him, the PAC recommends the names "Mapungubwe" and "Limpopo".
