This year's solar eclipse is destined to lure thousands of tourists from all over the world to the Soutpansberg region and already accommodation is almost fully booked at popular resorts for the December period.
The Soutpansberg Tourism Information Centre made an urgent appeal to residents who have accommodation available, to call them and let them know about it. These include game farm owners, guest houses, overnight facilities and even residents with extra rooms available or small flats.
According to Mr Johan van der Goot from the local Info Kiosk, people can contact him at (015) 516 0040 and he will put all the available accommodation on a list.
This year's solar eclipse will be unique in that it directly passes over the northern part of the province. This rare natural phenomenon will not be seen in our region again until the year 2030. A total solar eclipse will be visible in the Messina and Kruger National Park region.
In order to maximise the tourism opportunities in the area, WildNet Africa and Aventura Tshipise is organising a half-day eclipse workshop to be held at the Aventura conference centre on January 30.
"Unlike last year's Zambia/Zimbabwe eclipse, there will be very high demand not only internationally, but also among South Africans for the opportunity to see the eclipse," the organisers said in a statement.
The workshop would include presentations on communications for the eclipse as well as updates from various eclipse-related committees and initiatives.
Owners and proprietors of establishments north of Pietersburg have been invited to attend the event. There is no charge for attendance.
