The impending change of the province's name has sparked a widespread debate in all sectors, with public participation increasing by the day, as more people jump on the bandwagon with imaginative ideas.
Ad hoc committee chairperson Edgar Mushwana has confirmed that scores of names have been received. His committee will have consultative meetings throughout the province, before compiling a report and making recommendations to the Provincial Legislature.
The aim is to find a marketable name, which will be acceptable to all sections of the community, while also eliminating any possibility that the region will be confused with other provinces, such as North West.
Whereas Northern Province Premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi apparently favours the name Limpopo, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) has, for instance, suggested Mapungubwe, in recognition of an early culture in the province.
Certain business and other private sector leaders have, in turn, rejected Mapungubwe, on the grounds that visitors would find it difficult to pronounce. In addition, some argue that this name could be confused with Mpumalanga.
Great North Province is apparently a highly popular choice. However, this name has been rejected by yet others as unimaginative, and too similar to the current name.
A final decision is not likely to be made for several months, due to the lengthy process.
