News  Date: 28 January 2005

MUSINA – The Municipal Manager of Musina announced the arrest of a member of the Greater Musina Unemployed Forum (GMUF) this week on allegations of fraud and corruption.

In an official media release, Mr Abram Luruli gave details of the arrest and launched a political attack on various organisations, which he connected with the GMUF.

He said the GMUF recently attracted a lot of attention from the media after levelling fraud and corruption accusations at various government departments located within the Musina Local Municipality. He said it was interesting that a leader of the GMUF, who claims to be fighting corruption, was arrested on the same charges.

Mr Luruli said the GMUF leader “and his cohorts are getting support from political organisations such as the Pan Africanist Youth Congress (PAYCO), African Christian Democratic Party, Democratic Alliance, Pan African Congress and the United Democratic Movement.”

On Thursday, 13 January, police dispersed supporters of the GMUF when they attempted to stage a protest march on the Musina Local Municipality.

Neither the local or provincial communication offices of the SAPS could, upon enquiry, supply any particulars regarding the arrest mentioned in Mr Luruli’s official statement. They only indicated that the arrest was the result of as trap set for the particular person. The provincial office stated that it was a case being dealt with by the Anti-Corruption unit. The particular investigating officer of the said unit was, however, not available for comment.
