TSHIKUWI - Learners of George Mbulaheni Secondary School in Nzhelele are still taught under trees.

The principal, Mr Edward Nekhongoni, revealed that more than 900 learners have enrolled at the school and that they cannot be accomodated in the 11 classrooms. Nekhongoni further indicated that he has made several applications for more classrooms since 1996. “We need more than eight classrooms urgently,” he said.

When Mirror recently visited the school last Thursday, four classes were being given under trees. Nekhongoni added that, on rainy days, the pupils suffer as a result of a lack of proper classrooms.

The Regional Director of Education in Vhembe, Mr Masotsha Mathivha, said that his department is aware of the shortage of classes. He promised that the school would get eight classes this year, but he did not mention when the building would commence.
