MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) - The Mathematical Talent Search extended an invitation to Eduan van der Westhuizen to be one of 17 learners in the country to attend their final selection camp.
Eduan (17) is a Grade 11 learner from the Louis Trichardt High School. The maths camp, to be held at Rhodes University from 20 to 25 March in Grahamstown, will serve as the final selection camp for choosing the South African IMO and PAMO teams for 2005.
The IMO (international) team will compete in Mexico in July 2005 and the PAMO (Pan African Mathematics Olympiad) team will participate in Algeria in August 2005.
The aim in selecting the PAMO team will be to identify new young talent. Participation in the 2005 PAMO team is a selection criterion for the 2006 IMO team.
Students were chosen by taking the results from the monthly problem sets, the Sharp calculator competition and the December 2004 Stellenbosch camp scores.
Nine of the selected learners are from the Western Cape, four from Gauteng, two from KwaZulu Natal, one from Kimberley in the Northern Cape and one from Louis Trichardt in Limpopo.
