MOPANI – The police in the Mopani Area are investigating a case of attempted murder following an incident that took place at the Nyagelani Village in the Letsitele area last Thursday evening at about 22:00.

According to the spokesperson of the police in the area, Const Sylvia Hlungwane, it is alleged that the suspect, a 32-year-old woman, and her husband were sleeping when an argument started.

The origin of the argument could not be established. According to the police statement, it is alleged that the argument grew with time and ultimately the suspect left the room in which they had been sleeping. The statement further indicates that the suspect later came back with a plastic dish containing petrol.

She allegedly doused the victim with the petrol she was holding before setting him alight. The man was seriously injured during the ordeal. He was taken to the local hospital for treatment from where his condition was reportedly still critical at the time of going to the press.

The suspect vanished shortly after the incident. The police embarked on a manhunt shortly thereafter, until they arrested her on Monday afternoon. She was still to appear in the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court at the time of going to press while the police were investigating the matter further.
