THOHOYANDOU - North Tech College, based in Thohoyandou, was found guilty of cheating in the matriculation examination in 2004 and was banned by the Limpopo Department of Education.
This was announced by the Superintendent General of the Department of Education, Prof Herry Nengwekhulu last Wednesday.
Last week, the spokesperson of the Department of Education, Mr Freddy Greaver, announced that there would be no matriculation examination rewriting. It is said that 119 learners were involved in the scandal and they cheated in Maths, English and Afrikaans. He further said he had already negotiated with the North Tech College and Umalusi about the resolution from the Education Department.
He confirmed that the Department of Education would not punish the teachers.
Greaver said learners had engaged themselves in cheating in front of the invigilators. He further confirmed that there was no chance for examination cheaters to rewrite the examination now; they will have to wait for next year.
The school is known in Thohoyandou for producing quality results.
Learners said they are disappointed with the decision from the Department of Education. Mr Vhutshilo Muthelo said he had planned to register at the Tshwane University of Technology and the decision taken by the Education Department was “killing his soul.”
