MUKULA - A Grade 11 pupil of Mbilwi Secondary School, Rendani Mauda (16), will soon jet off to Poland, after he was selected as the best candidate in the Geography Olympiad in the International Geographic Union (IGU)’s Cool School Olympiad.
Rendani hails from Mukula Village, outside Thohoyandou.
According to the principal of Mbilwi, Mr Nditsheni Ramugondo, South Africa is participating for the third time in this Geographic Olympiad.
“In 2000, South Africa participated for the first time in the competition and Mbilwi was chosen to represent the country in Seoul, South Korea,” Ramugondo adds.
“When our team arrived in South Korea, we found that we were not only representing South Africa, but also the whole African continent,” said Ramugondo. “In 2002, South Africa hosted the competition and Mbilwi was again asked to represent the country in Durban,” the principal said.
“In 2004, South Africa selected learners from different provinces where Mauda from Mbilwi Secondary was selected to fly to Poland on later this week,” he added.
Rendani’s father Mr Daniel Mauda told Mirror that he was happy with the performance of his son. “I regard this as a positive development in the Mauda family,” said his father.
