Ms Dziedzi Musekene (27) with some of the colour-changing porridge
News Date: 06 May 2005
HADUMASI – Ms Dziedzi Musekene (27) of Hadumasi village, east of Thohoyandou, is still recovering from shock after the porridge she was cooking suddenly turned brown in colour. She then gave the porridge to a dog, which amazingly refused to eat it.
She finally threw the deadly porridge into the family pit toilet, because she suspects it is the works of the devil.
Dziedzi was preparing a meal for her husband and two kids as usual on Sunday morning, when the unfortunate incident happened.
Diedzi explained: “I started preparing a meal for my family as usual and I did not expect something bad to happen. At first there was no sign that the porridge would change, but when the water started boiling, I realized that there was something unusual about the colour. I was mixing the maize meal with water in the pot, using my wooden spoon when the colour suddenly changed to brown. After the first pot turned brown, I tried the second one and it also turned brown. I then gave the porridge to my dog, but it refused to eat. I was so frustrated that I did not know what to do. I called the neighbours to come and witness the miracle and they were also shocked. Together with my mother in law, Mudangawe, we threw the evil porridge into the outside toilet pit because we could see that those were the works of the devil and there was no need to keep the porridge in the house. I only heard incredible things happening to other people but I never thought it would happen to me one day.”
Married to Ntshavheni with two kids, Dziedzi added that she is now afraid that the incident may happen again but she is happy about the support she is getting from the local community.
“I had scores of visitors since the incident happened and this gives me courage to go on with life as if nothing happened. Some even prayed for me and since then, I have prepared different meals but the porridge has not changed again. I pray that things of this nature should never happen to me again because I will never be able to enjoy life any-more.”
Dziedzi’s mother in law, Mudangawe, who also saw the porridge, was also still reeling with shock when Mirror visited the family on Monday morning. She said: “I could not believe my eyes because I have never seen such a miracle since I was born. The incident has damaged our lives because we cannot sleep properly since it happened. I advised Dziedzi to throw the evil porridge in the toilet pit because I believe the devil has no place to stay in our family. We are now relieved because it has stopped happening and we believe we will be able to enjoy life like other people.”
A prominent clergyman in the Vhembe district, Pastor Fhatuwani Rantsana of the Devine Cross Church, said the incident is clearly the work of the devil but things of this nature could only be defeated through prayer. “These are the last days and we as Christians are not baffled as the Bible predicted that evils of this nature would happen. We only look upon the Lord to defeat the evil forces and we believe the family will now live safely by the grace of the Lord.”
