THOHOYANDOU – A top local radio personality, Lufono Tsedu of Univen FM, proved beyond doubt that education and the microphone could be merged when he graduated with a BA in International Relations degree from the University of Venda recently.

“I would like to advise youths to take education seriously before venturing fully into the broadcasting industry. Education is the only basis from which knowledge and prosperity starts. It is also easier for one to shuffle between different careers if one is educated, ” said the 24-year-old DJ, who started as a producer of Mid-Morning Breeze four years ago.

Within a year of joining the station, Lufuno was promoted to become executive producer for Bridging the Gap. He now produces and presents Facts of Life, African Renaissance and Worker’s World. He is also the Marketing Manager of the station, which broadcasts from the University of Venda campus, on 99.8 MHz – covering a 50km radius and reaching towns like Thohoyandou, Makhado, Giyani and Soekmekaar with an approximate 161 000 listenership.

How did this young role model achieve all this while at the same time studying for his degree? “I did not allow fame to go to my head, but I gave myself more time to read my books. My secrets for success are hard work, effective time management and the desire to succeed. I set realistic goals for myself and I strive to achieve them without failure. I have also learnt to believe in myself and to learn from my past mistakes at all times,” he explained.

Affectionately called Tseducation by his fans, Lufuno said he would never forget to pass his gratitude to all the people who made him what he is today. “I would like to thank my fans for their unending support. My fellow workers at the radio station have also encouraged me throughout my studies. This is not the end of the road as I am planning to further my studies next year,” he concluded.
