News  Date: 30 April 2004

VALDEZIA - After celebrating ten years of democracy at Valdezia Xitasini with community members and local prominent leaders on April 25, a 19 year-old boy never got back home.

According to Insp Maano Sadike of the Waterval SAPS, the truck that was departing people to the respective homes after the function, drove over Voni Events Maluleke, after he failed to jump onto it, while it has already started moving. He said a case of culpable homicide has been opened.

The principal of Rivubye High School, Mr RW Chabalala said they did not expect to lose a pupil. "His untimely death is a great loss to his family and the school," he said.

Cllr Sipho Masuka said that Voni's death came as a shock tot he community as it happened during the jubilation of the country's celebrations of ten years in democracy. Masuka said that he is seriously concern with organisers of the event, whom he alleged they have failed to control the masses while dispersing after the celebration as well as failing to get active ushers in place.

"The lack of organisational skills and responsibility is the main cause of his death. In functions like this, organising skill strategies should have been put in place. If precautions were in place, the incident would not have happened.

The funeral will take place today, Friday, at the Valdezia cemetery in the morning.
