MOPANI – When Mr Peter Shonwe (25) paid his friend a visit at his house at Dwarsloop Village in the Mhala area last Friday afternoon, little did he know that he would end up lying on a hospital bed that night.
Shonwe and his friend had dinner together at his friend’s house after which they started discussing several issues. Shonwe left for his home at about 21:30. His friend decided to accompany him, as it was already late at night. According to the police, they decided to use a footpath that passes through the bushes.
Const Sylvia Hlungwane, spokesperson of the police in the area said that the men were while on the way, Shonwe decided to relieve himself, while his friend continued walking for a short distance and waited for him.
While he was still waiting for his friend, he heard a gunshot in the direction where Shonwe was relieving himself. He went closer only to find that Shonwe was lying on the ground.
He was bleeding profusely. His friend quickly rushed to the nearby police station and notified the police about the incident.
The police then took Shonwe to the nearby Tintswalo Hospital. His condition was reported stable at the time of going to the press. The police have appealed to anyone who has information regarding the case to contact them at Tel 0860 010 111.
In an unrelated case, the police in Mopani are investigating a case of murder and another one for attempted murder, following an incident that took place at the Mantenteng settlement in the Mhlala Area last Friday night at about 23:00.
According to the spokesperson for the police in the area, Const Sylvia Hlungwane, it is alleged that a bakery truck driver, who was on his way home, was gravely shocked when he saw two people lying in the middle of the road.
As he come closer, he realized that the men were severely injured and it looked as though they had been assaulted and dumped on the road.
The driver, who turned out to be a Good Samaritan took the men to the nearby Tintswalo Hospital. One of the men, Moses Nonyane (23), was certified dead on arrival at the hospital. The other, Patrick Mathebula, was still in a critical condition at the time of going to press.
Although the reason for their assault could not be established, the police assume that the men might have been assaulted somewhere at a drinking spree and then dumped in the road with a view to create the impression that they had been knocked down by a vehicle.
Realizing that there was no clue about the case, the only hope for the police is Patrick Mathebula, who could give them the information if he survives. The police have, however, appealed to anyone who has information that may lead to the arrest of the culprits to contact the nearest police station.
