The Dr NE Nangammbi Soccer Challenge was launched during a ceremony at the Muraga tribal offices on Saturday.
The event caters for 16 amateur teams from around Ward 39 and 21 of the Thulamela Municipality. The winners will receive R4 000, new soccer kit, a floating trophy, gold medals and a soccer ball, while the the runners-up will receive R3 000, new soccer kit, silver medals and soccer ball. The team that will end in third position will receive R2 000, a new soccer kit and soccer ball, while R1 000, a soccer kit and soccer ball await the team in fouth position.
Nangammbi has indicated that his company is ploughing back what it has gained from the community. “It is through the support of the community that my business is where it is today,” he added. He also mentioned that Vhembe is a region rich in talent and that "we have, over the years, seen some talented South African soccer players being unearthed from this area”.
Ms Elsie Malada, the tournament organiser, stated that it was important that future stars' talent be identified at grassroots level. She applauded the sponsor for helping to identify the talent of the region's youth and added that they should be proud of their talent. The councillor for Ward 39, Mr David Mamushiana, stated that the government could not curb the high rate of unemployment alone. He appealed to the business community to follow in the footsteps of Dr Nangammbi, saying sports had become a major employment provider of late.
Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter. In 2005 Kaizer received an award from the province's premier as Best Sports Presenter. The same year he was also nominated as Best Sports Reporter by the Makhado Municipality. Kaizer was awarded the Mathatha Tsedu award in 2014.
