News  Date: 30 April 2004

LEVUBU - The police at Levubu arrested a 63-year-old farmer for raping a 16- year-old girl who was on the farm for a visit to her relative, who is a domestic worker on the farm, last Thursday.

According to Capt Ailwei Mushavhanamadi of the SAPS in the Vhembe Region, the farmer proposed sex, but the girl refused. Later, he allegedly lured the girl into his house where he raped her. After the ordeal, the farmer allegedly gave the girl R100 as a bribe to silence her.

The girl reported the matter at Levubu Police station.

The police arrived at the farmer's home and arrested him in the evening at about 22:00 and he will appear in court soon.

In a separate incident, the police at Musina staged a manhunt after an unknown suspect at Musina Freedom Park, the former "Matswale u sike ntsala moragu," raped a two-year-old baby last Sunday.

According to Mushavhanamadi, the baby was left with her mother's sister when the mother was going to her job at Tzaneen.

When the mother came back from her workplace, she found that her baby seemed to be ill and she took her to the Musina Hospital for treatment.

The doctor confirmed that she had been raped and her private parts seriously injured. She died last Thursday.

No arrest has been made, as the suspect is still unknown, and the police appealed to the community to report to the nearest police station if they know the suspect.
