Corrupt police officer still waiting to be sentenced

News  Date: 30 April 2004

MAKHADO – Insp Lenah Mamadi of Musina SAPS, who had already been found guilty on theft charges, appeared in the Makhado regional Magistrate's Court for sentencing on April 30.

The court found that on November 11, 2003, she staged a temporary roadblock between Musina and Beitbrige with a police reservist. She then took about 3 million Zimbabwe dollars (R10 000) belonging to a Zimbabwean woman.

According to the police, the victim filed a theft charge against Mamadi in January this year.

During the court's proceedings last Tuesday, when she was appearing for sentencing at the Makhado regional court, Mamadi's attorney, Mr Letsema shocked the court, when he announced that he was withdrawing from representing his client, as she had instructed him to do so. Even though she was appearing for sentencing, she told the court that her new attorney (Makhuvha attorneys) from Thohoyandou would represent her.

However, as Adv MJ Mushasha arrived late, the court postponed the case to April 29 for sentencing.
