Man accused of assaulting wife to death in family feud

MOPANI – The police in Mopani have arrested a 48-year-old man and charged him with murder, following the death of his wife. The incident relating to the case took place at the Koktrust settlement in the Calcata area last Friday night.

Const Sylvia Hlungwane, the spokesperson for the police in the Mopani Area, said that the suspect and his 41-year-old wife were engaged in a heated debate during the night of the incident. The source of the argument could not be established.

During the argument, it is alleged, the suspect started to assault the deceased with various objects. According to the police statement, the deceased’s mother-in-law later intervened. She requested the deceased to come and sleep with her in her room after realizing that the suspect was threatening to kill her.

The statement indicates that the woman only managed to survive for the night, as she died the following morning. According to the police statement, a family doctor conducted a post mortem two days after the incident. According to the police statement the results for the post mortem have revealed that the deceased had died of multiple assault wounds which resulted in severe bleeding.

The suspect was in hiding throughout the weekend. He was arrested on Tuesday morning. He was still to appear in court at the time of going to press.
