THOHOYANDOU – There has been a great concern from community members over the past decades that Thohoyandou Town is inaccessible.
In December this year, the town’s inaccessibility will be a thing of the past because the construction of a road that proceeds through the CBD will be complete. The Thulamela Municipality has put aside R4,2m for the 1km road project which had already begun on June 2.
A spokesperson for the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Ndwamato Tshiila, told Mirror that the project comprises the paved road, the upgrading of an existing walking space, parking bays, street lighting and landscaping.
“The project aims to increase accessibility to the town. The road starts from the main entrance of the Vhembe District Municipality and proceeds southwards, towards the post office where it will connect with the existing street next to the Thohoyandou Post Office. We are aware that there are buildings and businesses which will be affected by the construction of the road, but we have made arrangements with the relevant stakeholders for alternative spaces.”
Tshiila added that the project would also create job opportunities for members of the local communities.
“There are labour-intensive construction methods which have been included in the project, aimed at creating jobs for the local communi-ties.”
He concluded by saying that the estimated period for the construction of the road is six months and the project is expected to be completed in December.
