The headman position left open at Thanani village when headman Solomon Tshikhudo Nethanani (80) passed away seven years ago was finally filled last weekend when his son, Mukosi Calvin Nethanani (35), was installed as new headman at the village.
During a ceremony held at the Thase Secondary School grounds on Saturday, local traditional leader Chief Ntikedzeni Muraga-Mphaphuli formally announced him as headman of the Thanani area under Muraga. The new name of the headman is Vhakoma Vho Phindulo Nethanani, his ndumi is Mualusi Nethanani while his khadzi is Rolivhuwa Nethanani.
Formally installing him as headman, Chief Muraga-Mphaphuli said it was important that the residents of Thanani have a headman for the sake of proper governance. “We need development in the whole village, and one way to achieve that is proper governance and that our people get services closer to them. They do not have to travel far for something that they could get from the headman,” said Muraga. Quoting from the Bible, Muraga urged the new headman to be humble and to listen to advice from the family and elders of the village.
“Expectations are high from the community and this will need you to be dedicated. Do not undermine the family as they have the right to remove you from the position, and please let us work together for the benefit of our people,” added Muraga.
In his words of encouragement to the new headman, Archbishop Elias Miriri of the more-than-one-million-strong United African Apostolic Church urged the new headman to revere God if he wanted his rule to endure.
“You are not a chief but a mouthpiece of the chief in the area. Do not overstep your boundaries. Be a humble servant of the chief and seek the wisdom of God. Do not drown yourself in booze and not womanize and all will be well with you,” he said.
The local Thulamela ward councillor David Mamushiana commended the family and Chief Muraga for having filled the vacant position, saying it would work to the advantage of the village in terms of development.
The new headman said he would work under the chief for the benefit of the people.
