Water project to help Mamuhohi's residents

News  Date: 05 August 2005

MAMUHOHI - The community of Mamuhohi, in the remote area of Nzhelele, will no longer suffer from thirst, as the Eskom Development Foundation has come to their aid by donating R20 000 for the installation of the Rinwa Rothe Water Project.

According to a spokesperson, Mr Thomas Tshamano, the Mamuhohi community suffered from a shortage of water from 1984. In 2004, they started to work positively towards the providing of water in the area and came up with a plan of each household’s contributing R25, eventually collecting R3,600.

Before starting with their project, they asked for a donation from Eskom Thohoyandou towards the project and the Eskom Development Foundation contributed R20 000.

Thohoyandou Eskom Customer Care Services Manager, Mr Ntshavhani Nenguda, said Eskom, as a giant in community care, has bought a 800 litre tank, taps and pipes for the creation of the pipeline. Nengunda said Eskom is supporting the government principles of <,i>Batho Pele (people’s interest first) and the public-private-partnership (PPP) focusing on the development of rural communities.

He appealed to the community of Mamuhohi, Bobejane and Dzumbama to care about the water. About 5 000 community members are going to benefit from this water project.

The Executive Mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Sam Moeti, says large parts of South Africa are facing a serious water shortage, and is appealing to all people to use water sparingly.

“Some years we have better rainfall than others and some areas in the country receive more rain than others. However, we still remain a water-scarce country. We therefore need to do everything possible to try and save water,” says Moeti. “Studies have shown that the average suburban house can reduce their water consumption by up to 40%, without sacrificing any comfort. Reducing the toilet flush volume alone can save 20% of total water consumption,” Moeti said.
