News  Date: 13 August 2004

THOHOYANDOU – The popular Zimbabwean Tshingondo musician, Jonah Moyo (48), is in Venda to celebrate South Africa’s ten years of democracy. Accompanied by his five-member group, the Devera Ngwena Jazz Band, Moyo will stage several shows around Thohoyandou and Polokwane in August and Septem-ber.

The multiple award-winning artist has in the past shared the stage with UB 40, Lucky Dube, Ziggy Marley, Kanda Bongoman and Thomas Mapfumo. He has also performed in Holland, Belgium, West Germany, the United Kingdom, Swaziland, Malawi and Mozambique.

Moyo told Mirror: “Most of the Venda people have just heard my music on the radio and they have never seen me performing live. I know my music is very popular here in Venda. That is why I decided to come and give my fans the best of my music. I want to celebrate the decade of South Africa’s democracy with my fans here and I believe this will be the best gift I ever presented to them. The people of Venda have supported me unceasingly and I want to give them my gratitude through memorable live performances, which they will enjoy. I owe my success to the people of this area and I know they will be happy to know that I am around.”

Moyo shot into stardom when he released his debut album, Devera Ngwena Zhimozhi, in 1979. He has released more than 35 albums and he has 36 gold disks to his credit.

“My father was a pianist and my elder brothers were guitarists. Music was a family trend and I just found myself with no other option except to follow a musical career.”

Moyo said he would spend some time in Venda because he loves this area whole-heartedly.

“In fact, my tour will cover the whole of South Africa, but I will spend most of my time in Venda. I love this place because the culture of the Vhavenda bears some similarities with that of the Zimbabweans.”

Moyo said he first came to South Africa in April when he held four shows at the Waterfront in Cape Town.

“The response from the fans was overwhelming and I received a standing ovation after each show. The South Africans love my music and in return I will keep on giving them the best.”

The self-taught guitar wizard said he is planning to release his latest album, Sugar Bum Bum, soon.

“The album will be a mixture of Venda, Zulu, English and Shona. It will be recorded and released in South Africa as an appreciation for the support I received from the people of South Africa.” he said in conclusion.
