News  Date: 09 December 2005

A specialised police investigative unit from Vhembe arrested two immigration officers last week on charges of corruption at the Beit Bridge border post.

The two suspects are Stone Phiri (37) and Lindelani Helen Matshete (28). Both of the immigration officers were on duty when they were caught redhanded while stamping Zimbabwean passports in the absence of their owners. Mr Phiri was caught with seven Zimbabwean passports in his possession, while 19 passports were found in the possession of Matshete.

The arrested suspects appeared before the Musina Magistrate’s court on December 1. Phiri was released on R1 000 bail, while Matshete was kept in police custody. Their case was postponed until Wednesday this week. At the time of going to press, no further details were available.
