Concern Group team up with the ACDP

News  Date: 27 January 2006

Cllr B F Hlongwane, chairperson of the ACDP’s Makhado branch, has expressed his satisfaction and delight with the unique agreement reached between the ACPD (African Christian Democratic Party) and the Community Concern Group (CCG) of Louis Trichardt.

Cllr Hlongwane said that the CCG consists of the most active agricultural union, the TAU SA North, representatives of the Louis Trichardt business community and representatives of various churches. He said the TAU SA North proved their commitment towards the community and their commitment towards Christian values are beyond doubt. Cllr Hlongwane added that the Louis Trichardt community continuously tried to build bridges of cooperation with the ANC but without much success. He said the agreement will strengthen the ability of local communities to fight for their values and rights.

The agreement comes in light of the upcoming local government elections. The purpose is to allow for direct representation of the members of the CCG. Cllr Hlongwane said the ACDP agreed to incorporate candidates from the CCG onto the ACDP’s candidate list.

In reaction, the DA’s (Democratic Alliance) member of parliament in Vhembe, Mr Thimothy Maanda, has questioned the move.

“I must ask if the ACDP has forgotten its Christian base. It would only be correct for it to clarify to members of the public what its actual position is in allowing non-Christians on its list,” he said.

The DA says it notes with concern the activities of the CCG.

In a statement, the DA explains that the CCG had previously approached the DA for five positions on their PR lists. This request was declined as, the DA states, they could not merely insert the names of these individuals on their list, forsaking the hard work of dedicated members who have in the past stayed committed to establish the party as an effective opposition.

“The DA finds it extraordinary that a very principled Christian group such as the ACDP could find space for a renegade and frustrated group who have joined its ranks to contest under its banner,” the statement reads.
