MOPANI – The Mopani police have opened murder dockets following several incidents that took place in the area over the past weekend.
The first incident took place in the Sekgosese police cells on Monday night at about 21:45. According to the spokesperson of the police in the area, Capt Moatshe Ngoepe, the deceased and the other trial-awaiting prisoners were kept inside the police cell when the incident occurred.
According to the police statement, an argument broke among the prisoners. The basis for the argument could not be established. During the argument, one of the prisoners allegedly beat the deceased to death. The deceased was identified as William Mokgola (28), who had been arrested for common robbery.
The police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the case. He was still to appear before the Sekgosese Magistrates’s court at the time of going to press.
The other incident took place at the Mkhushu settlement in the Calcata area on Monday night, at about 20:00. According to the statement, the suspect was alone at home when his wife came and allegedly forced open the main door of the house.
The suspect told the police that he thought it was a thief who was trying to break into the house when he produced a firearm and shot her. She died instantly. The police said they will not release the deceased’s identity until after the suspect has appeared in court. The suspect was arrested the following morning and was still to appear in court at the time of going to press.
In a separate incident that took place at the Letsitele compound hostel, a 24-year-old woman was found dead in the street on Sunday morning. She had several stab wounds all over her body. The police’s preliminary investigations have linked the deceased’s boyfriend with the incident.
The boyfriend was arrested on Monday afternoon. The suspect is a 37-year-old man and he was still to appear in court at the time of going to press. The deceased was identified as Rosinah Machete (42). The police have appealed to anyone with information regarding any of the cases, to contact them at their toll free number: 0860 010 111.
