Grobler Street is "Back on the map"

It seems as if Google Maps has found Grobler Street and safely put it back where it belongs – parallel to President Street in Louis Trichardt.

The Zoutpansberger reported last week on the disappearance of Grobler Street. It was mysteriously replaced with Meyer Street on Google Maps. Efforts from local residents to get Google to correct the error were unsuccessful for a couple of weeks. Efforts to contact the mighty Google were similarly unsuccessful.

Earlier this week, the error was corrected, without any explanation or notification. This is hopefully a relief to the local businesses such as KFC and Timber City, that have stores in Grobler Street.

Errors on Google Maps are not such an uncommon occurrence, and has caused quite a few dilemmas. In March, this year a 24-year-old sightseer was stranded for five days in the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. She followed a route that does not exist on Google Maps and got completely lost. She ran out of gas and was left stranded in an area with no cell phone signal. After struggling for several days to attract the attention of helpers (and to survive), she walked for 35 km where she found a weak signal. She called 911, but the signal went down half-way through the call. Luckily the emergency services could trace her and she was rescued an hour later.

The same thing is unlikely to happen in Louis Trichardt, but it can still create a lot of confusion if streets start wandering about on maps.
