David Khangale (43), a teacher at Nthetsheleseni Secondary School based at Tshivhulani Village, was arrested by the Thohoyandou police for attempted murder, after he had allegedly shot a 22-year-old man at Tshivhulani Bus stop on Saturday night.

Police spokesperson Capt Mashudu Malelu said the victim, Mr Mulalo Mulambilu, was at the bus stop with friends waiting for his brother’s arrival from an educational tour. “While they were waiting, they heard a gunshot, and suddenly a bullet hit Mulambilu in the right leg, below the knee. He collapsed and he was taken to the Tshilidzini Hospital for treatment and Khangale handed himself to the Thohoyandou police. His licensed pistol was confiscated and he appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing an attempted murder charge,” Insp Nelufule said.

Malelo said it is a unique case. “We have never had cases like this before and the suspect’s firearm has been confiscated,” he added.

The spokesperson of the Department of Education, Mr Ndo Mangala, said the department was also investigating the case.

Khangale was granted bail of R2 000 in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
