News  Date: 21 July 2006

The police in the Mopani area are investigating a case of rape, following an incident that took place at the Sekgopo Village on Sunday.

According to the spokesperson for the police in the area, Capt Maano Sadike, the victim was in the company of a friend when the incident occurred. The victim is a 16-year-old girl. The two were walking along a footpath on the outskirts of the village when the incident occurred. According to the police statement, the two girls saw a group of four boys from a distance as they were approaching the bushy area.

The boys were walking in the opposite direction. The statement indicates that the boys started throwing stones in the direction of the girls. The victim and her friend were scared and they ran away. While running away, the victim fell.

At that stage, the suspects were chasing them. The suspects grabbed the victim and pulled her to a nearby donga. That is where they allegedly took turns in raping her. The victim’s friend managed to escape and rushed home, where she notified the villagers about the incident.

The statement further indicates that the concerned residents quickly rushed to the scene, but it was too late. On Monday evening, the police arrested three young men, whose age ranges between 17 to 19.

They were still to appear in court at the time of going to press, while the search for the fourth suspect was still continuing. The police have appealed to anyone who has information regarding the case to contact them at their toll-free number, 0860 010 111 or at any police station.
