Dr Nkhelebeni Phawana laid to rest

Hundreds of people from all corners of Vhembe gathered at Shakadza on Saturday to pay their last respects to the well-known community builder, businessman, academic, author and publisher, Dr Nkhelebeni Edward Phaswana.

Phaswana was described as an intelligent student who was always one of the best learners in class during his secondary education in Malilele. He was a committed academic, brave and able to speak his mind without fear and that made him popular on the Univen campus, one of his former collagues said.

The Dean of the School of Human and Sciences, Prof Mokgale Makgopa, said during the funeral that Phaswana had actively participated in various university committees. “In these committees, he would make sure that his voice was heard. He was not afraid to question his line manager, including the executive management,” said Makgopa.  Apostle Robert Nduvheni, who met the late Dr Phaswana in 1977 while in secondary school, said he was always rated one of the best learners in the class.

Dr Phaswana (57), the Head of the Department of Communication and Applied Language Studies at Univen, passed away on Sunday, 8 October, in the NetCare hospital in Polokwane after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Jemina, son Eddy and daughter, Mbofholowo.
