The manager of the Tshwane University of Technology’s Soshanguve branch, Mr Johannes Mathopo, said choral music in the tertiary community is gaining momentum.

His choir participated in the annual Kanana Bread PhalaPhala FM choir competition at the Thohoyandou Town last weekend.

Mothapo said this after his choir won the first prize in the western rendition category of the competition.

Though fewer people attended the competition, it still attracted hundreds of choral music fans. Some of the fans said the attendance was influenced by Saturday’s Telkom Charity cup soccer games.

In the division for standard African songs, the results were as follows: Dr MJ Madiba Secondary School, Tsakani Youth Choir, Cotton Dail Choir and Rhisinga High School.

The results of the category for western songs were: Cotton Dail Choir, Rhisinga High School, Maboko Nkomo Choir and the Dr MJ Madiba Secondary School.

On day two, the results of the western rendition songs were as follows: Soshanguve University of Technology, Giyani Choir, Polokwane and the Drakensberg Choir, while in the African song, Giyani Adult Choir took home a trophy, followed by Polokwane, Soshanguve Choir and Vhembe SAPS.
