Man stabbed to death in argument over girlfriend

News  Date: 22 September 2006

An argument over a girlfriend at Homu 14A settlement in the Giyani area led to the death of a 20-year-old man, last Saturday evening.

Capt Maano Sadike, spokesperson for the police in the Mopani area, said that the accused was in the company of his girlfriend at his home when the incident occurred.

According to the police statement, while the two were relaxing in the bedroom, the deceased arrived and knocked at the door. When the accused opened the door, the deceased stepped in. The statement indicates that a heated argument ensued between the deceased and the accused.

The statement further indicates that the argument centred around the accused’s girlfriend. It is alleged that the deceased was accusing the accused of stealing his girlfriend. The accused maintained that the girl was his legitimate lover and that the deceased had no reason to believe that the latter had a sexual relationship with her.

The statement further indicates that, during the argument, the accused lost his temper and produced a knife. He allegedly stabbed the deceased twice in the chest and in the back. The controversial girl phoned the paramedics after the incident.

On arrival, the paramedics certified the deceased dead. The deceased was identified as Paskals Mathebula (20). The accused, Mighty Hlungwane (19) was arrested and charged with murder the following morning. He appeared in the Giyani Magistrate’s court on Tuesday. He was not asked to plead. The case was postponed until next Wednesday, September 20. The accused will be in custody until his next court date as his bail application was denied. The police are investigating the matter further.
