Woman shot dead in family feud

Police in Mopani are investigating a case of murder following an incident that took place at Bolobedu settlement last Saturday evening at about 19:00.

Mopani Police Spokesperson, Capt Maano Sadike, said a police officer, Insp Leonard Malematja (42), was in the company of his wife when the incident occurred.

They were sitting in the bedroom. According to the police statement, an argument ensued between the two. The statement indicates that the man was accusing the woman of having an affair with another man. The statement further indicates that, during the argument, the man allegedly produced a service pistol and shot the deceased in the forehead. She died instantly. The man later turned the weapon on himself, shooting himself in the head. He was seriously wounded. The deceased’s two daughters aged 12 and 14 were inside the house when the incident occurred.

The man was taken to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital where his condition was said to be unstable at the time of going to press. The deceased was identified as Joyce Malematja (40).

The police have opened a murder docket and are investigating the matter further.
