Pioneer passes away

Pioneer figure and much loved family man Mr Andrew Tokalon passed away at his home at the age of 81 years on Monday, September 25. He would have celebrated his 82nd birthday on November 22.

Mr Tokalon’s death came after a long suffering from Parkinson’s disease for the past nine years. He was born in 1924 in Cyprus and, after immigrating to South Africa, settled in Louis Trichardt in 1960. He will be remembered as the owner of the Great North Cafe as well as Permac Dry Cleaners in Krogh Street.

The late Mr Tokalon is survived by his wife, Angela, son Nico, daughters Irene (living in Cyprus) and Marina, and family. He will be buried from the St Mark’s Anglican Church on Friday, September 29 at 11:00.

Andries joined the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror in April 1993 as a darkroom assistant. Within a couple of months he moved over to the production side of the newspaper and eventually doubled as a reporter. In 1995 he left the newspaper group and travelled overseas for a couple of months. In 1996, Andries rejoined the Zoutpansberger as a reporter. In August 2002, he was appointed as News Editor of the Zoutpansberger, a position he holds until today.
