DJ recovers after crash

News  Date: 06 October 2006

A well-known DJ for Phalaphala FM, Mpho Nefale, is recovering from the injuries he sustained during a horrific car accident that involved his car, a Honda Ballade, and a Toyota Hilux bakkie.

Nefale, 45, was released from the MediClinic in Polokwane last week Wednesday, a day after he was admitted following a head-on collision that left his right leg broken. Nefale, 45, was driving along the Punda Maria road between Thohoyandou and Tshakhuma on September 23 when the accident happened.

The accident happened at about 03:30, when Nefale was escorting a bus that was transporting the station's listeners who were going to Johannesburg International Airport to board a plane to Thailand.

The delegation was part of the 110 people who were taking part in the station's annual trip Nefale organised for the listeners to different countries.

Nefale says he was driving alone towards Makhado when a Toyota Hilux approached from the opposite direction and: “just turned left without any warning.”

“I tried to avoid the oncoming car, but it was too late and we ended up hitting each other head-on. I sustained a broken right leg and my right ear was also swollen; I also have scratches on my right hand,” says Nefale while adding that two passengers in the bakkie also sustained serious injuries while the driver, who did not have a driver's license, sustained minor injuries.

Nefale, who was released from MediClinic last week Wednesday, says he will report back to work on the first of November.

He is recovering at his home in Nirvana, outside Polokwane, and says he is missing his slot, Vhandilani, which runs from 07:00 to 09:00, Monday to Friday. Nefale has been a radio presenter for the past 22 years and he received awards as the best DJ for the then Radio Venda in 1992, 1993 and 1994.
