The housing crisis at Musina municipality is still continuing despite intervention by Premier Sello Moloto.

Mid last year, Moloto visited the municipality with his cabinet in an attempt to defuse the volatile situation that threatened the stability of this municipality. During that time, Moloto advised that the concerned group, headed by Sinky Makushu, should work with the municipality in order to help identify deserving people, including pensioners, so that they could benefit from the 300 RDP houses to be built at Section 7, then called Sihlalangenkani.

The site was named Sihlalangenkani by the protesting people after they had invaded it while claiming that they were left out from the housing list by an alleged corrupt municipal officer, in favour of illegal immigrants who bribed the officials.

Two municipal officers were arrested for their involvement in the alleged corruption practices. One, however, passed away while the other was dismissed from his position at the municipality.

After more than a year since Moloto had visited the area, the housing problem in the area is far from over and the matter has now gone to the Pretoria High Court. This comes after the municipality approached the High Court, demanding the eviction of the invaders.

The invaders challenged the order while claiming that they were left out from the list of people who were going to benefit from the 150 RDP houses under construction near Section 7, where they are staying now.

Makushu says 150 houses have been allocated to illegal immigrants while genuine citizens who have been applying for RDP houses since 1994 are being ignored.

The municipal spokesperson, Phumudzo Makharamedzha, says: "We cannot tell if a person is an illegal immigrant if that person has a South African ID. If there are people who believe there is a person who fraudulently acquired a South African ID, then they must report that to the police."
