THOHOYANDOU – There is a new message of hope from Divhani Nefefe (20) of Thohoyandou Block G, a local motor mechanic who was born with a paralyzed right hand, but who did not allow his handicap to stop him from making a significant contribution to the economic development of the country.
Because his hand is deformed and does not function at all, the zealous Nefefe made a name for himself by fixing cars with one hand, a heavy job that many will agree needs a person with two hands in good working condition. While most people prefer talking the simple language of computers, pen and paper, Nefefe speaks the tough language of spanners, radiators, gearboxes, bolts and nuts.
The self-taught mechanic, who dropped out of school in Grade 11, said he has been fixing cars under a tree at Thohoyandou Shopping Complex with one hand for the past four years. “I wanted to set an example to other people with disabilities that being handicapped does not mean that one is useless. It all depends on one’s attitude and determination to succeed and the urge to complete a task. Most of the people think that the only thing for the disabled is to sit and wait for the government’s social grant. I want to prove the fact that the disabled are useful people who are also gifted and creative.”
Asked why he bothers himself by doing such a heavy job with one hand while he receives disability grant from the government, Nefefe quickly said: “It is not all about money. It is about utilizing one’s talent and rendering service to my beloved community. Contributing to other people’s lives makes me feel proud because I am assisting in the economic growth of my country. I never studied mechanical engineering, but the recipe of my success is hard work, motivation and self-discipline. I also believe in myself and I never allow my handicap to have a negative impact on my job.”
Though Nefefe is still working under the supervision of Mr Peter Mudau, he dreams of becoming his own boss one day.
“I dream of owning a decent workshop where I will conduct my business professionally. Rome was not built in a day and I believe I will make it because I always dream of success. Success does not depend on who you are, but it depends on how you apply your dreams in real life situations.”
