THOHOYANDOU - The fruits of their hard labour benefited 738 graduates who received their certificates, diplomas and degrees at a graduation ceremony of the University of Venda for Science and Technology that was held at the university auditorium on Saturday.

The occasion was attended by representatives from the national government, officials from the private sector and high profile academics.

During his keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Midlands State University (Zimbabwe), Prof Ngwabi Bhebe, said he appreciates the good work done by the graduates and he also encouraged them to further their studies as learning is a continuous process that cultivates academic freedom.

Bhebe further said that there is a need for modern universities to produce graduates who will be fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to face the challenges of the job market with courage and determination. He also stressed the fact that universities must work together to overcome the common challenges confronting higher education today.

“There should be greater collaboration amongst higher education institutions to win the war against poverty and starvation in Africa. Universities must promote community development by imparting the necessary knowledge and skills to our students. There is a high demand for tertiary education and it is the responsibility of the universities, especially Univen, which is situated in the far northern part of South Africa, to manage these resources.”

Bhebe thanked the parents and guardians of the graduates for spending the little money they had on the education of their dependants. He concluded by encouraging the graduates to assist in the development of their communities through the skills they gained during the years of their studies.

Happiness became the order of the day as parents and guardians of the graduates were ululating and dancing as graduates ascended the stage to collect their hard-earned certificates.
