A 36-year-old man from Gauteng was arrested in Musina on Wednesday morning, after he was found in possession of counterfeit money worth R12 200, police said.

Police spokesman for Vhembe District Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate told Mirror that members of the Crime Prevention Unit who were doing routine patrols in the Central Business District arrested the suspect. "It is alleged that the Crime Prevention Unit was on visible policing in the Musina CBD when they spotted a taxi, which was refueling at an Engen Service Station. The taxi had passengers and on conducting searches police recovered R12 200 from the suspect, leading to his arrest," he said.

The counterfeit currency comprised bundles of R100 and R200 notes.

"Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect was coming from Gauteng Province and heading towards Zimbabwe to visit his sister," Tshilate said.

He said the suspect would appear in the Musina magistrate’s court soon on charges of possessing counterfeit money.
