The learner who obtained the highest marks in last year’s Grade 12 Business Economics final examinations in Limpopo, Fulufhelo Siphuma (18), has big plans for the future.

"I am going to study for a BCom Accounting degree at the University of Johannesburg. I know I will definitely make it because I believe in myself. There is nothing impossible because to me, success is a matter of obligation that I always dream about," said Fulufhelo, who did her Grade 12 at Tshivhase High School, outside Thohoyandou. She stays at Makonde village with her parents and three younger sisters.

She obtained an A-symbol, scoring 383 out of 400 marks, making her the leading learner in the Business Economics examinations in Limpopo. She also obtained three more As in Accounting, Economics and Tshivenda. She did all these subjects at Higher Grade.

Fulufhelo shares her secret of success with Mirror: "I never delay, because I know that each minute is valuable in life. During the year, I worked very hard because I was determined to succeed. I know and understand that no one will ever build a future for me and that is why I was always committed to my books."

She gives a message of courage to those who did not make it in their examinations: "Failure is just a wake-up call to rectify one’s mistakes. There is always a room for disappointment while the door of improvement is always open for those who work hard."

The energetic genius says she will never forget the support she received from different stakeholders regarding her achievement. "My parents have been very supportive in my educational work. However, it would be a great mistake not to recognize the contributions of my teachers and fellow learners who were always there when I needed them."

Fulufhelo’s proud father, Mr Zwiitani Siphuma, an educator at Mphalaleni High School, said he remained on cloud nine after such a great achievement by his daughter. "Her name is synonymous with books and she cannot be separated from them. She is always hungry for knowledge and we have great expectations for her. We have no doubt that she will definitely make it in her tertiary education. She is such a blessing to the family and we are happy that she has put us on the map."

The excited father says he could not believe it when her daughter was honoured by the Department of Education in December. "I couldn’t hide my excitement when she ascended the stage to receive her trophy and certificate from the MEC for Education, Dr. Aaron Motswaledi, in Polokwane on 28 December. That was the most memorable and enjoyable experience for me as a parent. I danced until the soles of my shoes were torn out."

Fulufhelo’s jovial mother, Viginia, a professional nurse by profession, was equally impressed by the achievement of her daughter. "We thank God for giving us a wonderful gift in Fulufhelo because she is a brilliant child. As parents, we never stopped giving her support; we are very proud of her."
